The ‘Borrowed’ Polish Wolverine That Took Every RPG Afghanistan Threw and Never Lost a Crew S
2007, a military freight yard on the outskirts of Dina, northern Poland. It is May and a column of eight wheeled armored vehicles rolls slowly out of a logistics compound and onto flatbed rail cars bound for the port. Each one weighs 22 tons. Each one rides on eight independent wheels, sits low to the ground, and carries a turret armed with a 30 mm automatic cannon.
They are painted in a flat sand color that has no business being on Polish steel. The soldiers loading them do not trust them. The Polish press has already called them overpriced foreign junk, death traps on wheels, a billion-dollar mistake. The vehicles are not Polish designs, they are Finnish, built under license in a factory in Seaminovich Slaski, assembled from a blueprint Warsaw borrowed from Helsinki because Poland could not design its own armored carrier in time.
They look like a compromise. They look like a political procurement scandal waiting to happen. Over the next 7 years, these vehicles will deploy to one of the most violent provinces in Afghanistan. They will complete hundreds of combat patrols, survive direct hits from RPG7 rockets without a single round penetrating the crew compartment, and bring every crew member home alive from enemy fire.
Not one Polish soldier will die inside a Rosomac from hostile weapons striking the hull. Not one. Their designation is the KTO Rosac. The name means Wolverine, and it is the borrowed vehicle that proved borrowing was the smartest decision the Polish military ever made. To understand why Poland needed the Rosamarmac, you need to understand the problem Warsaw faced at the turn of the millennium.
The Cold War was over. Poland had joined NATO in 1999, but the Polish army was still equipped almost entirely with Soviet era hardware, BTR60s, BRDM2s. Vehicles designed in the 1950s and60s for a doctrine that assumed nuclear battlefields and mass conscript formations. They offered thin aluminum armor, outdated optics, and no protection whatsoever against mines or shaped charge warheads.
When NATO began planning for expeditionary operations in the Balkans and then Afghanistan, Poland faced a blunt reality. Its existing vehicles could not survive a modern battlefield. They could not protect infantry against improvised explosive devices. They could not fight back against ambushes with anything heavier than a machine gun, and they could not be upgraded far enough to matter.
Poland needed a modern 8×8 armored vehicle. It needed one fast and it could not afford to spend a decade designing one from scratch. In 2002, the Polish Ministry of National Defense launched a competitive evaluation. Three contenders were tested. The Moag Pirina from Switzerland, the Sty Panda from Austria, and the Petria AMV from Finland.
The trials were held at the Wedan training ground in western Poland. The Finnish vehicle arrived on May 20th, covered nearly 2,700 km during evaluation without a single mechanical failure, and demonstrated a buoyancy reserve of over 14% at maximum combat weight. On December 20th, 2002, Poland selected the Patria AMV.
The contract was signed on April 15th, 2003. 690 vehicles, 313 fitted with the Italian Oto Malara hitfist 30P turret, 377 in various specialist configurations. The price tag approached 5 billion zote. Production was established at Vco Zakladi Mechanich in Smanovich Slaski, a defense plant in Upperia.
The first two serial vehicles rolled off the line in May 2004. The name Rossak, meaning Wolverine, was chosen through a public competition run by the military magazine Noah Technica Voscoa. By 2005, the 17th mechanized brigade at Midset became the first unit to receive them. The vehicle itself was a masterpiece of practical integration.
The hull was welded steel and aluminum riding on an 8×8 independent suspension with a Scania D12 turbo diesel engine producing 490 horsepower through a seven-speed automatic transmission. On paved roads, the Rosomac could exceed 100 kmh. In water, twin rear propellers pushed it at 10.
Its range on a single fuel load was 800 km. It could climb a 60% gradient, ford one and a half meters without preparation, and carry a crew of 3 plus 6 to 8 dismounted infantry in the rear compartment. The turret was the Hitfist 30P, a compact twoman installation mounting the 30 mm Bushmaster 2 dual feed cannon and a coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun.
The fire control system included thermal imaging, a laser rangefinder, and dayight optics that allowed the gunner to identify and engage targets in complete darkness. 220 rounds of 30 mm ammunition sat ready in the turret with another 250 stowed in the hull. Some vehicles also carried twin spike anti-tank guided missiles.
But the specification that would define the Rosomac’s reputation had nothing to do with its gun. It was the armor. In its base configuration, the Rosomarmac met Stanag 4569 level 3 to4 protection, meaning the front arc could stop 14.5 mm armor-piercing rounds that was adequate for European peacekeeping.
It was not adequate for Gazny province. Before the first vehicles shipped to Afghanistan in 2007, Polish engineers added a supplementary armor package that transformed the vehicle. Ceramic composite panels manufactured to an Israeli design were bolted across the hull in nine sections covering 35 to 45 m.
The turret received its own composite applique. 40 mm of ceramic tile backed by aramid weave in aluminum frames and over all of this went a cage of slat armor later replaced by a highdensity net system called QET produced by Chineti Q. The net worked by catching the nose cone of an incoming RPG warhead and crushing it before the PO electric fuse could trigger the shaped charge jet. The system was not perfect.
Open sources estimate that slatter net armor defeat roughly 50% of incoming RPG rounds on impact. But combined with the ceramic composite underneath, the layered defense meant that even when the net failed, the ceramic panels absorbed the residual penetration. The total add-on kit weighed approximately 3 1/2 tons.

They entered combat operations in Gazny province by midJune. This was the combat debut not only of the Polish Rosomarmac, but of the entire Patria AMV family worldwide. No variant of this vehicle had ever been shot at in anger. Poland was the test case. The Polish contingent operated under the International Security Assistance Force assigned to Gazny Province under American command.
At peak strength, approximately 2500 Polish soldiers served in theater, operating from forward operating base Gazny, FOB warrior, combat outpost Carabag, and several fire bases along Highway 1, the Carbell to Kandahar corridor. The Rosamac served as the primary vehicle for convoy escort, armed patrol, quick reaction force deployment and route clearance. It was not a support vehicle.
It was the backbone. The fleet grew rapidly. 50 vehicles by 2008, 89 by 2010. At peak deployment, approximately 134 ROS operated simultaneously in theta with a cumulative 181 vehicles rotated through Afghanistan over the course of the mission. The first RPG strike came in early 2008.
An uparmored Rosomac on convoy escort duty took a direct hit from an RPG7 rocket. The warhead struck the hull. The ceramic composite and slat armor absorbed the blast. The crew returned fire with the 30 millimeter cannon, suppressed the ambush position, and drove the vehicle back to base under its own power.
No penetration, no casualties. The Rosomac had passed its first test. It would pass many more. In June 2008, another Rosomac took an RPG to the frontal armor plate during a patrol near Caraba. Again, no penetration. The crew was shaken but uninjured. The vehicle remained operational. In engagement after engagement, the pattern repeated.
Small arms fire rattled off the hull. Machine gun rounds struck the turret. RPG teams targeted the vehicles at close range along the narrow roads and compound walls of Gaznney’s villages, and the Rosomac absorbed every hit. According to Polish military assessments, no crew member was killed by enemy fire striking the armored hull of a Rosamac during the entire Afghan deployment.
The vehicle’s protection against ballistic threats and shaped charge warheads held. The threat that did kill Polish soldiers was the one no wheeled vehicle of that weight class could fully defeat. improvised explosive devices, large buried charges, some exceeding 100 kg of homemade explosive packed into culverts and buried beneath road surfaces, detonated under rosomac hulls with enough force to flip 22-tonon vehicles onto their roofs.
On July 28th, 2011, Sergeant Powell Posuat was killed when the Rosomac he was driving struck a massive buried EED near Highway 1. On October 23rd, 2011, Sergeant Marius Depuler died in similar circumstances. These were not failures of the vehicle’s design. They were the brutal reality of asymmetric warfare, where attackers simply increased the size of the charge until physics overwhelmed any armor solution.
Eight Rosomaxs were permanently destroyed in Afghanistan. Others were damaged, repaired, and returned to service. Rosomo Max, the manufacturer, deployed civilian technicians directly to the operating bases in Gazny to maintain the fleet. Damaged suspension components, blown tires, and scorched armor panels were replaced in theater.
The vehicle proved mechanically reliable in the Afghan heat, a climate far removed from the Finnish forests for which the original Patria AMV was designed. Polish commanders consistently rated the Rosamac as the best protected wheeled vehicle available to their contingent, superior to everything in the Polish infantry and comparable to heavier NATO platforms in theater.
Colonel Yanesh Kamarovski, deputy director of the Office for Fielding Armored Vehicles, gave early positive assessments of the vehicle’s combat performance. Ironically, 10 BRDM2 Sakal light vehicles sent to Afghanistan as a supposedly safer alternative proved so poorly protected that they were confined to static base defense duties and never ventured outside the wire on combat patrols.
The Rosamax war did not end with Afghanistan. In April 2023, as Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine entered its second year, Polish Prime Minister Mateosh Moravetski announced that Poland would deliver 100 Rosomac vehicles to Ukraine. Within days, the number rose. Government spokesman Potra Mueller cited 150.
President Vadimir Zalinski stated 200, 100 immediately, and 100 to follow. The first vehicles appeared in Ukrainian service by July 2023. Fielded by the 44th separate mechanized brigade among other units, Ukraine received approximately 60 Hitfist 30P armed infantry fighting vehicles plus three companies of rack 120 mm mortar carrier variants.
Ukrainian crews praised the fire control system, the accuracy of the Bushmaster 2 at night, the off-road mobility, and the survivability of the hull under drone and artillery fragment strikes. According to open- source tracking by the Orex project, at least six ROSAs have been confirmed destroyed in Ukrainian service and one damaged, including three vehicles lost during a single failed assault near Andreka on September 24th, 2024.
True losses are almost certainly higher than what visual evidence alone can confirm. Against its contemporaries, the Rosomac holds a distinctive position. The American Striker is lighter, cheaper, and produced in far greater numbers, but in its original configuration carried only a machine gun or grenade launcher, not a turreted 30mm cannon.
The German boxer is heavier, more modular, and better protected, but it costs significantly more and cannot swim. The older Russian BTR80 belongs to an entirely different generation with no modern fire control, no composite armor, and no mine protection. Worth mentioning, the Rosamac occupies the middle ground. It is not the heaviest, not the lightest, not the cheapest, but it is the one that went to war first in its family, took everything the enemy threw at it, and brought its people home.
Poland now operates over 1,000 Rosamax across 16 configurations, making it the largest operator of the Patria AMV family in the world. The modernization program centers on the ZSSW30 unmanned turret, which replaces the manned hitfist with a remotely operated 30 mm cannon and twin spike LR missiles. The first ZSSW30 equipped vehicles were delivered to the 21st Pod Hell Rifles Brigade in December 2023.
Contracts signed through 2024 and 25 cover hundreds of additional turrets and a new extended hull amphibious variant called the Rosomac L. The production license renewed in 2025 extends through 2034 2007. A freight yard in Gadinia. Sand colored vehicles on flatbed rail cars heading for a war nobody in Poland fully understood yet. The press called them borrowed junk.
The critics called them a scandal. The soldiers who rode in them called them something else entirely. The Rosomac was not a Polish design. It was not elegant. It was not original. It arrived in a country that wanted to build its own vehicles but did not have the time. And it went to a war that demanded protection.
Poland’s Soviet era fleet could never provide. It was too heavy to swim once the armor went on. It was too expensive for a defense budget still recovering from decades of neglect. It had every reason to fail. It did not fail.
