The ‘Copied’ Chinese Vehicle That Outnumbers Every Stryker NATO Has Ever Built D
October 1, 2009. Changan Avenue, Beijing. 60 years to the day since the founding of the People’s Republic. Columns of armor roll east beneath Tanaman Gate in perfect formation. Engines growling in low gear. Each vehicle painted in digital woodland camouflage so fresh the paint still smells of solvent.
Near the middle of the column, a shape appears that most Western defense analysts have never seen before. eight wheels, a low angular hull with a sloped glacis plate, a one-man turret mounting a 30mm autoc cannon, and a pair of anti-tankg guided missiles. It weighs 21 tons. It is fully amphibious. It can cross a river under its own power and emerge firing on the opposite bank.
It looks to the casual observer like a Chinese copy of something western, a striker with extra steps, a knockoff that borrowed its homework from three different continents. That assumption is wrong. That vehicle and more than 6,000 others exactly like it would go on to become the armored backbone of the largest wheeled mechanized force on Earth, equipping over 20 rapid reaction brigades, spawning more than 20 specialized variants from assault guns to self-propelled howitzers to air defense platforms and quietly building a mediumweight army that most Western militaries have not yet fully accounted for. Its designation is the type 08 known by its variant code ZPL08. It is the fighting vehicle the People’s Liberation Army bet its entire ground modernization on and the world barely noticed. To understand why the Type08 exists, you need to understand the problem China faced in the late 1990s. The People’s Liberation Army was, by most Western assessments, a conscript army trapped in the 1970s. Its infantry
rode into battle in vehicles derived from Soviet designs that predated the Korean War. Its armored personnel carriers were thin- skinned, slow, and lacked anything resembling a modern fire control system. China’s road network, however, was transforming. The government was pouring billions into highways, expressways, and bridges that linked the interior to the coast.
The PLA’s strategic planners recognized something that Western analysts were slow to grasp. A wheeled armored force, lighter than tanks, but faster and cheaper to deploy, could exploit that road network to move entire brigades across the country in days rather than weeks.
Beijing studied the United States Army Striker Brigade concept closely. They studied the French VBCI. They studied the Russian BTR80. Then they decided to build something of their own. The contract went to Ninkco, the China North Industries Corporation. Development began around the year 2000. Two competing designs were submitted. One from the Chongqing facility was based on the older WZ551 chassis, a 6×6 platform that had served the PLA since 1990.
The other from Narinko’s primary design bureau used an entirely new 8×8 hull with an H drive layout and independent McFersonson suspension on all eight wheels. The new design 1. A prototype was spotted undergoing road trials in 2006. By 2008, the vehicle had passed acceptance trials and entered series production. Its first public appearance came at the National Day Parade of 2009.
Crewed by soldiers of the 54th Group Army, the hull was welded from high strength steel with bolt-on aluminina ceramic composite armor plates across the frontal arc. Base protection stopped 12.7 mm armor-piercing rounds at 100 m and 7.62 mm fire from any angle. With the add-on ceramic package fitted, frontal protection rose to defeat 25 mm autoc cannon rounds at 1,000 m.
That meant the vehicle could survive fire from the same class of weapon it carried. The engine was a Douts BF6M1015C, a water cooled turbocharged V6 diesel producing 440 horsepower. That gave a powertoweight ratio of roughly 21 horsepower per ton, enough to push the vehicle to 100 km/h on paved roads and 40 off-road.
Range on internal fuel was 800 km. A single brigade could redeploy 500 km without a fuel stop. The turret carried the ZPT99, a 30 millimeter autoc cannon derived from the Russian Chipanov 2 A72 paired with a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun and two rail-mounted HJ 73C anti-tank guided missiles with a range of 4,000 m. The gunner had a computerized fire control system with automatic target tracking, laser range finding, and thermal imaging.
The commander had a digital battlefield management system linked by encrypted data link to every other vehicle in the formation. Three crew operated the vehicle. Seven infantry men rode in the rear compartment, dismounting through a powered ramp. But the turret was only the beginning. The real genius of the Type08 was not the infantry fighting vehicle.

Ninkco designed the type 08 around six interchangeable modules, engine, transmission, suspension, control systems, hull structure, weapon station, each could be swapped independently.
This meant the same production line that built the 30 mm infantry fighting vehicle could with a different turret and minor hull modifications produce an entirely different class of weapon. And that is exactly what China did. By 2011, the ZTL11 assault gun variant had passed trials.
It mounted a 105mm rifled gun derived from the British L7, firing armor-piercing rounds, high explosive shaped charge, and a laser beam riding gun launched anti-tank missile with a range of 5 km, a wheeled vehicle with the firepower of a light tank. By 2012, the PLL09 self-propelled howitzer variant entered service, mounting a 122mm gun on the same hull.
Then came the PGL12, a self-propelled anti-aircraft gun with a 35mm revolver cannon firing a thousand rounds per minute from an unmanned turret. Then an armored command vehicle, then an ambulance, then an engineering variant with a mine plow and line charge. Then a bridge layer, then electronic warfare platforms with retractable sensor masts and launch rails for drones.
More than 20 confirmed variants, all sharing the same engine, the same drivetrain, the same logistics chain. The scale of production was staggering. According to the International Institute for Strategic Studies Military Balance, for 2024, the PLA Ground Force fielded approximately 5,950 Type08 family vehicles.
The PLA Marine Corps operated a further 200. Total production exceeded 6,150 hulls. For comparison, the United States Army has built roughly 4,700 strikers since 2002. China exceeded that number on a single platform family in roughly the same time frame. Production remains ongoing. These vehicles did not sit in warehouses.
They became the equipment spine of the PLA’s medium combined arms brigades. The wheeled rapid reaction formations that mirror the American Striker Brigade combat team concept. According to United States Army TRA DOC analysis published in February 2025, the PLA field 78 combined arms brigades spread across 13 group armies.
The medium brigades are built entirely around the type 08 family. Infantry rides in ZBL08s. Fire support comes from ZTL11 assault guns. Artillery comes from PLL09 howitzers. Air defense comes from PGL12 gun systems. Command, logistics, engineering, and reconnaissance all ride on the same eight-W wheeled chassis.
One brigade, one logistics tail, one spare parts infantry. At the Juri training base in Inner Mongolia, medium brigades of the 73rd Group Army conducted full-scale live fire exercises with the entire family operating together. Assault guns engaging targets at maximum range while infantry fighting vehicles advanced under suppressive fire and howitzers delivered coordinated barriers from kilometers behind the line.
During the Zapad interaction exercise in 2021 at Ching Tongsia, Russian soldiers trained alongside Chinese crews on the vehicles, operating the fire control and communication systems firsthand. The export market told its own story. Ninko marketed the platform internationally as the VN1 for the infantry fighting vehicle and ST1 for the assault gun.
Venezuela purchased VN1s as part of a $500 million package in 2012. Thailand ordered 38 in 2017 and 41 more in 2019. Equipping the Royal Thai Army’s second cavalry regiment, Gabon paraded vin1s at its 2019 independence celebrations. The only confirmed combat use came in Nigeria under a $152 million Nuringo contract signed in 2019.
ST1 assault guns arrived at Lagos in April 2020. By January 2021, they were committed to operation Tur Takai Bango against Boo Haram and Islamic State fighters in northern Nigeria. It was the first time a Type08 derivative had been fired in anger. Not every export bid succeeded.
In Morocco, the VN1 competed in four months of head-to-head trials beginning in 2022 against India’s Tata WHAP, the Chinese vehicle lost. Reports cited the Indian platform’s more powerful 600 horsepower Cummins engine, superior reliability during endurance testing, and serious concerns about Narinko’s long-term after sales support.
India signed a deal for 150 units with local assembly near Casablanca, the first vehicles rolling off the line in December 2025. It was a rare and public defeat for Chinese armor exports, and it exposed the one vulnerability Western competitors had long suspected. The Type 08 could be built cheaply and in enormous numbers.
But when tested wheelto-wheel against a competitor with a stronger drivetrain and a proven support network, it could lose. Against its Western rivals, the Type08 occupied a deliberate middle ground. The American Striker’s base variant carried a 12.7 mm remote weapon station. The ZBL08 carried a 30 mm autoc cannon and guided missiles.
The Type08 was fully amphibious. The Striker was not against the French VBCI and the German Boxer. The comparison reversed. Both European vehicles weighed over 30 tons, carried heavier armor, and mounted larger caliber weapons. The Boxer’s modular mission pod system allowed roll changes in hours, but neither the VBCI nor the Boxer could swim.
Neither had been produced in anything close to the type08’s numbers, and neither came with an integrated family of assault guns, howitzers, and air defense systems from the same factory. Against the Russian BTR82A, most analysts rated the Type08 a full generation ahead in sensors, fire control, and networking.
A successor is already arriving. The Type 19, first spotted at a Narinko factory in late 2023, features an unmanned 30mm turret, a pop-up four round anti-tank missile module, thicker add-on armor, and a combat weight of roughly 25 tons. The ZTL19 assault gun variant began reaching frontline units in May 2025.
Both are designed to gradually replace the type 08 in medium brigades over the coming decade. October 1, 2009, Changan Avenue, Beijing. It was underpowered compared to European rivals. It lacked an active protection system. Its armor could not stop a modern anti-tank missile. Its combat record was almost non-existent. And yet, it worked. It worked on the frozen plateau of Tibet, 4,000 m above sea level. It worked in the jungles of Southeast Asian export customers.
It worked in the deserts of northern Nigeria against insurgents who had defeated heavier vehicles. It worked because China did not build one vehicle. China built an entire army on a single chassis. More than 6,000 machines sharing the same engine, the same wheels, the same spare parts, the same maintenance manual.
The West built better individual platforms. China built a system. And while the world was busy underestimating it, Beijing kept the production lines running. That is not imitation. That is industrial strategy on a scale most nations cannot match.
