Inside the vehicle park, rows of eight- wheeled trucks sit loaded with 15-tonon flat racks. Each one stacked with crated ammunition, bottled water, rations, and engineering stores.
A hydraulic hook arm locks onto a flat rack, lifts it, drags it onto the truck bed, and secures it. The whole process takes less than 60 seconds. No crane, no forklift, no dock, just one driver and one machine. Nobody films it. No journalist writes about it. No thumbnail will ever feature it. It is enormous, pale desert tan and completely unremarkable.
It has no turret, no cannon, no missile launcher. It carries no regimental insignia that anyone outside the Royal Logistic Corps would recognize. It does not look like a weapon of war. It looks like a commercial holage truck someone bolted armor plates onto because that is almost exactly what it is.
And yet this machine and several hundred others like it will move more tonnage of ammunition, fuel, water, and stores across Helman Province than every warrior, mastiff, bulldog, and armored fighting vehicle in theater combined. Not by a small margin, by an order of magnitude. It will form the backbone of every combat logistics patrol that keeps British forces alive in southern Afghanistan.
It will drive through the most heavily mined roads on Earth, absorb improvised explosive device blasts that would have destroyed its predecessors, and deliver its cargo to forward operating bases that no helicopter could resupply fast enough. Its designation was the MPLS, the enhanced palletized load system, and it was the truck that quietly won a war that no armored vehicle could have sustained alone.
To understand why this truck existed, you need to understand the problem Britain faced in the early 2000s. By the late 1990s, the British Army’s logistics fleet was exhausted. The trucks that moved the army’s supplies were cold war relics. Bedford MJs dating from the 1980s carried 4-tonon payloads on suspensions designed for the gentle roads of West Germany.
Leland DAFF8 tunners and Foddin cargo vehicles, workh horses of the British Army of the Rine, were reaching the end of their structural lives. Spare parts were becoming impossible to source because both Leland DAFF and Fodin had ceased commercial production. The vehicles were designed exclusively for the moderate climates and paved infrastructure of Northern Europe.
They were left-hand drive only. They had no air conditioning, no modern electronics, and no provision for armor. The heaviest logistics capability sat with the DRO PS fleet, the demountable rack offload and pickup system, a family of Leland DAFF and Fodden 8-wheelers built in the early 1990s to carry 15ton flat racks of artillery ammunition in the event of a Soviet invasion of central Europe.
DROS was a formidable system for its intended purpose. But that purpose was a highintensity European war that never came. When DROPS trucks deployed to Iraq and then to Afghanistan, they struggled. Desert heat overwhelmed cooling systems designed for German winters. Fine dust infiltrated engines built to European tolerances.
The vehicles had never been intended to operate in ambient temperatures above 40° C and Helmond exceeded 50. In January 2002, the Ministry of Defense issued an invitation to tender for the support vehicle program, one of the largest logistics procurement contracts in British military history. Six manufacturers competed.
Oshkosh from the United States, Volvo from Sweden, MercedesBenz from Germany, Stewart and Stevenson from Texas, Leland Trucks, Britishowned but part of the American Packer Group, and Mal Truck and Bus, the Munich based German manufacturer represented through its UK subsidiary M1. On the 31st of March 2005, the Ministry of Defense placed an order worth 1.
1 billion pounds for 5,165 vehicles and 69 recovery trailers. An option for a further 277 trucks was exercised the following year. By the time production concluded in 2013, the British Army had taken delivery of more than 7,500 MHX series trucks. It was the single largest vehicle procurement program the British Army had conducted since the Second World War.
The vehicle at the heart of the logistics fleet was the HX77, an 8×8 all-wheel drive platform built on a purpose-designed military chassis. Power came from a MD2066 common rail diesel engine, a 10.5 L inline six-cylinder unit producing 440 horsepower and 2100 Newton m of torque. The gearbox was a ZF1 12-speed Asronic automated transmission mated to a M two-speed transfer case.
The truck could carry 15 tons of cargo at speeds up to 100 km/h across a laden range of 800 km. It could ford rivers, climb gradients that would stall a civilian lorry, and operate continuously in ambient temperatures that cooked lesser machines. But the specification that mattered most in Afghanistan was not horsepower or payload.
It was the hook lift system. The EPLS variant of the HX77 was fitted with a hydraulic hook arm manufactured by the Swedish company HIAB that could autonomously load and unload a 15-tonon flat rack or a standard ESO 20ft container without any external equipment. One driver, one truck, 60 seconds, drop the load, drive away, come back with a fresh flatrack, no crane, no logistics depot, no waiting.
In a theater where every stationary minute was a minute exposed to enemy fire, that speed was not convenience. It was survival. The truck also received something its predecessors never had, protection. Under a program known as Project Fortress, more than 300 MANNSV trucks received enhanced armor kits, blast resistant modifications, and electronic countermeasures designed to defeat radiocontrolled improvised explosive devices.
The cab was climate controlled, sealed against dust, and fitted with ballistic glass. Later, EPLS variants carried modular armor packs that could be configured to meet specific threat levels. The driver and co-driver sat in a protected shell that bore no resemblance to the unarmored cab of the Foden DROPS it replaced.
1,098 applique armor kits were included in the original contract for operations in Afghanistan. Those kits were further upgraded across 324 vehicles in two separate enhancement programs. The message was clear. The Ministry of Defense expected these trucks to take hits, and it expected them to keep driving.

A single CLP typically consisted of 70 or more vehicles. Eight-Weled EPLS trucks and their older DROs cousins formed the core. Each one carrying 15 tons of ammunition, water, fuel, or engineering stores. Surrounding them were mastiff armored patrol vehicles, jackal weapons platforms, and vehicles from the Afghan National Army.
Every truck carried a top cover sentry manning a generalpurpose machine gun. Overhead, Apache attack helicopters provided close air support. The convoy moved as a single organism, bristling with firepower, crawling forward at 15 to 20 km/h across terrain that punished every axle.
The soldiers who drove these convoys belong to the Royal Logistic Corps, the largest core in the British Army and one of the least publicly recognized units like 19 Combat Service Support Battalion, and the Queen’s own Girka Logistic Regiment rotated through Helmond on six-month tours, mounting CLPS every few days.
Their job was simple in concept and terrifying in execution. Load the trucks at Bastion, drive them to the forward operating bases, unload, drive back, repeat. The scale of what these trucks moved is difficult to comprehend without context. A single mastiff armored vehicle, the blast protected patrol truck that became the public face of the Afghan war, could carry approximately two tons of cargo in addition to its crew.
A warrior infantry fighting vehicle carried its crew, dismounts, and their personal ammunition. Neither was a logistics vehicle. Neither was designed to haul bulk stores. A single EPLS truck carried 15 tons. One truck equaled roughly seven or eight mastiffs in cargo capacity. A convoy of 40 EPLS trucks could move 600 tons in a single patrol.
In a theater where daily consumption of ammunition, fuel, water, and rations across the British area of operations ran into hundreds of tons, nothing else came close. Helicopters helped, but they could not replace road convoys. A Chinuk could carry approximately 10 tons of underslung cargo per sorty, but Chinuks were in desperately short supply.

Drivers who completed a six-month tour might run 15 to 20 CLPS. Each one lasting multiple days, each one threading the same lethal routes.
They did it without recognition, without fanfare, and without the combat narrative that attached to infantry patrols. The EPLS trucks proved their worth in ways that went beyond raw tonnage. The hook lift system meant that pre-loaded flat racks could be staged at forward operating bases, ready for rapid collection and replacement.
A truck could arrive at a base, drop a loaded flat rack of ammunition, pick up an empty one, and be moving again in minutes. This reduced the time convoys spent stationary at vulnerable points, which directly reduced exposure to indirect fire and ambush. It also meant that forward bases could maintain buffer stocks without dedicating permanent transport assets.
During the draw down from Helmond, which culminated in the handover of Camp Bastion to Afghan forces on the 26th of October 2014, EPLS trucks and the broader MANSV fleet bore the enormous logistical burden of repatriating thousands of vehicles, containers, and tons of equipment. The base had grown to accommodate nearly 30,000 personnel at its peak.
Dismantling it and shipping its contents home was one of the largest reverse logistics operations the British Army had ever conducted. The trucks that had supplied the war now emptied it. Every major NATO ally in Afghanistan operated logistics trucks. The comparison that matters most is with the American Oshkosh HTT, the heavy expanded mobility tactical truck that formed the backbone of United States military logistics.
The HMT was a proven design battle tested from the Gulf War through two decades of Middle Eastern operations. It carried 10 tons in its standard cargo variant with a maximum payload of approximately 11 tons. Its engine was powerful, its reliability was respected, and it was available in enormous numbers.
The mans carried 15 tons per flat track on a chassis that was newer, more fuel efficient, and designed from the outset for modern automated transmissions and electronic engine management. The HMT required a dedicated crane or logistics node to load and unload cargo in most configurations.
The EPLS could do it alone, anywhere, in under a minute. In a dispersed theater like Helmond, where forward operating bases sat in remote compounds accessible only by dirt track, that autonomy was decisive. Against other NATO logistics vehicles, the manhx family held a similar advantage. The French used Renault trucks.
The Germans, ironically, operated their own MAN variants. The Canadians relied on a mix of American and European platforms. None offered the same combination of payload, self-loading capability, blast protection, and range that the EPLS brought to Helmond. The mansv program did not end with Afghanistan.
In 2018, Rhin Metal Man military vehicles won a contract worth over 43 million to supply 382 retrofit kits, converting existing HX trucks into EPLS configuration. That conversion program was completed in March 2021, bringing the total EPLS fleet to 559 vehicles. In 20124, under a rapid acquisition contract worth £282 million, the Ministry of Defense ordered an additional 500 MHX trucks to reinforce the logistic spine of the army in response to increased NATO commitments.
As of 2025, more than 8,000 man trucks have been ordered by Britain across two decades of procurement. The platform remains the backbone of British Army logistics with no replacement in sight. The Foden and Leland DFD OS trucks it replaced were finally retired in early 2020. They had served for nearly 30 years, far beyond their intended lifespan in conditions they were never designed to face.

It was assembled across multiple countries, procured through a multinational defense contract, and delivered to an army that needed it more urgently than it needed almost any armored fighting vehicle in its inventory.
It carried no weapons of its own. It won no battle honors. It earned no public recognition and it moved more ammunition, more fuel, more water, and more supplies across the most dangerous roads in the world than everything else in the British Order of Battle combined. Not because it was heroic, because it was there every day, loaded and moving. That is not glamour.
