Rubber band tracks at the rear, standard truck wheels at the front, a six-cylinder gasoline engine producing 128 horsepower. It weighs just under 10 tons. It looks like someone welded a naval weapon station onto a delivery truck. Officers questioned whether the chassis could even handle the recoil. Infantrymen who saw it for the first time assumed it was a prototype that would never leave the testing ground.
They were wrong. This vehicle would fight from the beaches of Normandy to the bridge at Remagen. From the frozen forests of the Ardennes to the hills of Korea, it would destroy more enemy aircraft than any other American ground weapon. At the most heavily defended bridge crossing of the entire war, and when the skies emptied of enemy planes, it would turn those four guns level and become the single most devastating anti-infantry weapon the United States Army had ever fielded.
Soldiers called it the meat chopper. Its official designation was the M16 multiple gun motor carriage, and it was never supposed to be a ground weapon at all. To understand why the M16 existed, you need to understand the problem the United States Army faced in 1940. American ground forces had no effective mobile anti-aircraft defense.
The threat of dive bombers and low-level strafing runs, proven devastating in Poland and France, demanded a weapon that could keep pace with armored columns and engage fast-moving aircraft at close range. Fixed anti-aircraft batteries were too slow to relocate. Towed guns took too long to set up.
The Army needed something that could shoot while moving, or at worst, within seconds of stopping. The answer came from an unlikely source, the W.L. Maxson Corporation of New York. Founded by William Leslie Maxson, a former United States Navy officer and prolific inventor, had been developing electrically powered gun mounts for naval use.
Maxson proposed mounting multiple .50 caliber Brownings on a powered turret small enough to fit a half-track. The first version carried two guns and was fitted to the M3 half-track chassis as the M13. Over 1,100 were built, but combat in Italy proved two guns were not enough. Maxson went back to the drawing board and doubled the armament.
The result was the M45 quad mount, four M2 heavy barrel Brownings arranged in two stacked pairs, electrically traversed through a full 360°, elevating from -10° to +90°. Two 6-V batteries kept charged by a small Briggs & Stratton gasoline generator powered the entire traverse and elevation system.
The gunner sat on a canvas seat between the gun pairs, aiming through an M1X reflector sight with built-in lead computation. Each gun fired between 450 and 550 rounds per minute. Combined, the four barrels produced a cyclic rate of approximately 2,200 rounds per minute. That is roughly 37 rounds every second of armor-piercing incendiary ammunition.
The M16 carried 5,000 rounds of .50 caliber ammunition, enough for approximately 8 minutes of continuous fire. Standard doctrine called for alternating the upper and lower pairs, so one set cooled while the other engaged. One man could operate the entire system. The vehicle itself was built for speed, not survivability.
The White 160AX inline six-cylinder engine pushed the half-track to roughly 42 mph on roads with a range of 175 miles on a 60-gallon tank. Armor protection was minimal by design. The M16 was not meant to absorb punishment. It was meant to deliver it. The crew of five operated in an open-topped fighting compartment with no overhead cover.
If an enemy shell found them, the thin steel offered nothing. but the doctrine was simple. The Luftwaffe threw everything it had at the crossing. American gunners claimed 109 aircraft destroyed and 36 probably destroyed. Not a single bomb hit the bridge. The 482nd Battalion, the first anti-aircraft unit to reach the bridgehead, earned a presidential unit citation. During the Ardennes Offensive in December 1944, the M16 proved its versatility under the worst possible conditions. On the morning of December 19, the 482nd Battalion came under direct attack. The M16’s war did not end in 1945. In Korea, it found its truest purpose. Against massed Chinese infantry attacks at night, the quad .50 became the anchor of perimeter defense. Gunners fired only two of four barrels to conserve ammunition when promised air drops never arrived. On paper, the German Wirbelwind looked superior. Built on a Panzer IV chassis with an armored turret mounting the 2-cm Flakvierling 38 quad cannon, it offered heavier rounds and far better crew protection, but only approximately 100 Wirbelwinds were ever built. Its successor, the Ostwind, managed fewer than 44.
The M16s saw 2,877 new vehicles produced between May 1943 and March 1944 alone, with an additional 568 M13s and 109 T10 half-tracks converted to the same standard. The Soviets received a thousand of the related M17 variant through lend-lease. The British had no equivalent at all. What the M16 lacked in armor, it compensated for in numbers, mechanical reliability from commercial truck components, and a rate of fire no comparable system could match.
The M16 was declared obsolete by the United States Army in 1958. But the M45 turret refused to die. Remounted on trailers and later bolted into the beds of cargo trucks, the quad 50 served through the Vietnam War for convoy escort and base defense. The French used M45 mounts at Dien Bien Phu. Israel rebuilt the turret with twin 20 mm cannon as the TCM-20, which served into the 1980s.
