They Mocked His ‘Frankenstein’ Sherman — Until He Destroyed 5 German Tanks With 5 Shots D

On June 14th, 1944, in a village called LJV in Normandy, a sergeant named Wilfried Harris sat in a Sherman tank that looked wrong. The barrel was too long. In June of 1944, the British army possessed exactly one tank-mounted weapon capable of killing a panther from the front. One. And the men who built the tank carrying it had been ordered in writing to stop what they were doing and walk away. The story of how that weapon survived begins not in Normandy, but in the Libyan desert two years earlier with a man who had been blown out of a burning tank and refused to forget what it felt like when your gun could not reach the enemy.

In June of 1942, at a place called Gazala in Libya, Lieutenant Colonel George Witheridge sat inside an M3 Grant tank and watched his shells do nothing. The Grant carried a 75mm gun, the same caliber that would later arm the Sherman. Wither’s crew fired at the German panzers advancing through the dust. The rounds hit. They bounced.

Raml’s tanks kept coming. Then something hit the Grant. Witheridge was blown out of the turret. He survived, broken, burned, but alive. The army declared him unfit for combat duty. They sent him to a desk. But Witheridge remembered. He remembered what it felt like to fire a gun that could not kill the thing trying to kill you.

He drove their Shermans. He saw what the machine could do. The reliability, the speed, the mechanical simplicity that kept it running when British tanks broke down. Witheridge came back to England sold. Not on the Sherman’s gun. He knew the 75 was already obsolete. But on the Sherman itself, the chassis, the hull, the thing that moved and kept moving. The gun was the problem.

The platform was the answer. All someone had to do was put the right gun on it. Now there was a gun. Britain had the 17 pounder, a 76 mm anti-tank weapon that could punch through 140 mm of steel at a thousand yard. On paper, it was everything the 75 was not. It could kill a Tiger. It could kill a Panther.

It could kill anything the Germans had. But there was a reason it was sitting on the ground behind a towed shield instead of inside a tank. The 17 pounder was enormous. When it fired, the breach traveled 40 in backward, over 3 ft of violent recoil, slamming inside a turret that had perhaps 18 in to spare. Every engineer who looked at the problem said the same thing. The Department of Tank Design had its own project, the A30 Challenger, and it was behind schedule, over budget, and failing trials. The last thing anyone in the department wanted was two officers at a gunnery school in Dorset proving that a better solution already existed in a shed.

This is the moment where most stories end. A letter from above. A project killed in a single paragraph. Two men reassigned to something harmless. And 18 months later, British tank crews arrive in Normandy with guns that cannot touch the Panther from the front. That is the version of history that almost happened.

But Witheridge had been inside a burning grant at Gazala. He had heard the sound of shells bouncing off German armor, and he was not a man who followed orders when the orders were wrong. He picked up the telephone. Witheridge had spent years in the army. He had connections and he used them without hesitation.

His first call went to Major General Raymond Briggs, the former commanding officer of the First Armored Division in North Africa and now director of the Royal Armored Corps. Briggs had seen the desert. Briggs knew what happened when British guns could not match German armor. He listened. Through Briggs, Witheridge reached Claude Gibb, director general of weapons and instruments production at the Ministry of Supply.

Gibb was not a soldier. He was an industrialist, a man who understood manufacturing. And when Witheridge and Brighty explained what they had done, a 17 pounder firing from inside a Sherman turret, crude but functional, Gibb did not ask whether it was elegant. The loader dropped a shell in. The brereech swung down. Simple. If you had the ceiling height inside a Sherman turret, there was no ceiling height. the brereech would hit the roof before it opened far enough to load. Kilborn’s first move was to rotate the entire brereech mechanism 90°. Instead of opening upward, it now opened to the left.

The loader would push the shell in sideways. It was awkward. It was slower. And it worked because the turret was wider than it was tall. By using the width instead of the height, Kilborn had stolen the inches he needed. But that was only the beginning. The recoil cylinders on a standard 17p pounder sat behind the gun in a straight line, absorbing 40 in of backward travel.

There was no room for 40 in behind the gun in a Sherman turret. Kilbornne threw out the original cylinders entirely. He designed new ones, shorter, fatter, and mounted them not behind the gun, but on either side of it. Two cylinders, one high, one low, cradling the barrel between them. Each cylinder absorbed half the recoil. Neither needed 40 in.

Together, they stopped the gun in a space the turret could handle. Think about what that means. The problem that every engineer had called unsolvable. The gun is too big for the turret. Kilbornne solved not by changing the turret, but by changing how the gun lived inside it. Then came the secondary problems, and there were many.

The bigger breach meant the loader could no longer escape through the commander’s hatch in an emergency. So, Kilbornne cut a new hatch into the turret roof. The radio that normally sat at the back of the turret had nowhere to go. So, he welded an armored box onto the outside, what crews would come to call the bustle, and punched a hole through the casting to reach it.

The hull gunner’s position was eliminated entirely. his seat, his gunport, his periscope, all removed, and the space filled with racks for the 17 pounders ammunition, which was longer and heavier than the old 75 mm rounds. By November 11th, 1943, Kilbornne had a working prototype.

The Frankenstein had become a real tank. And now something remarkable happened. Before the prototype had even completed final testing, before the War Office had signed off on performance, before anyone had fired it in conditions resembling combat, an order was placed for 2,100 units. Hold that number. 2,100 tanks ordered before the design was proven.

That was not confidence. That was desperation. The men making that decision knew what was waiting in France. They knew about the Panther. They knew that without this weapon, British armor would land at Normandy, unable to fight the enemy’s heaviest tanks head on. And they knew the Challenger would not be ready in time.

Production began in January of 1944. The factories worked from existing Sherman holes, mostly the M4 A4, designated the Sherman 5 by the British. Each conversion took weeks of skilled labor. The turret had to be partially rebuilt. The gun had to be factory fitted with Kilborn’s modified recoil system.

Every Firefly, crews had started calling it that by March, likely because of the violent muzzle flash when the 17 pounder fired, was a handmade modification of a mass-roduced American tank. By May 31st, 1944, 6 days before the invasion, 342 Fireflies had been delivered to the 21st Army Group. 342 For an entire army group preparing to invade a continent defended by panthers, tigers, and the best equipped armored divisions Germany had ever fielded.

That was enough for exactly one Firefly per troop of four tanks. Three ordinary Shermans whose 75mm guns could not kill a Panther from the front and one Frankenstein that could. The men who would crew those Fireflies had no idea they were about to become the most hunted tanks in Normandy. On June 6th, 1944, the tanks of the fourth/7th Royal Dragoon Guards rolled off their landing craft onto Gold Beach at 7:20 in the morning.

They were the first armored unit to touch Normandy. Among them was Sergeant Wilfried Harris. Harris was 33 years old from Walsaw in the West Midlands. He had joined the 4th/7th before the war, left the army in 35, and come back the day it started. One tank per troop, the only one in the troop that could kill what was waiting inland. Within 48 hours, every British tanker in Normandy understood the problem.

The Panther was not rare. Intelligence had predicted scattered appearances, a few here, a few there. Instead, Panzer alone fielded 89 Panthers. The 12th SS Hitler Yugand had more. They were everywhere in the hedros south of the beaches, and every engagement followed the same sickening pattern. British 75s opened fire.

The shells bounced. The Panthers gun answered once. A Sherman burned. But something else was happening. Something the Germans had not expected. On June 9th, three days after the landings, 12 Panthers from the 12th SS attacked the village of Nobessa. A Canadian Firefly commanded by Lieutenant Henry was waiting.

His gunner, Trooper Chapman, watched the Panthers advance in a column until they lined up, as he later put it, like ducks in a row and fired six rounds. Five Panthers were destroyed in under two minutes. The attack collapsed. That engagement sent a message up the German chain of command. Not every Sherman was the same.

One of them hit harder. One of them punched through frontal armor at ranges where the 75 was useless. And that one had a barrel you could identify from a thousand yard. Longer, thinner, unmistakable against the hedro. The order went out to every German tank crew and anti-tank position in Normandy. Find the long-barreled Sherman.

Kill it first before it fires, before anything else. Overnight, the Firefly became the most important tank in every British troop and the most endangered. Crews started looking for ways to hide. Some painted the forward half of the barrel white, a trick called countershading, trying to make it look shorter at distance.

Others fitted false muzzle brakes halfway along the barrel to disguise its true length. A few even bolted dummy 75mm guns to the turret bustle and reverse the turret so the fake gun pointed forward and the real one pointed back. None of it changed the fundamental equation. One Firefly per four tanks. Lose it and the other three had nothing that could stop a Panther.

By June 23rd, barely 2 and 1/2 weeks in, 22 fireflies had been knocked out across Normandy. Only six replacements had arrived. Remember that number from earlier, 342 delivered before the invasion. Now, think about what 22 losses and six replacements means for a weapon you cannot afford to lose. This was the state of things on June 13th when the 50th North Umbrean Infantry Division received orders to push south of Bayou and take a cluster of villages.

One of them was called Lynv. The division would attack with the Durham Light Infantry on foot, supported by tanks of the fourth/7th Dragoon Guards. Harris’s Firefly was assigned to fourth troop A squadron. At full strength, the troop had four tanks. By the morning of June 14th, it had three, one already lost.

Lieutenant Morrison commanded. Corporal Johnson had a standard Sherman. And Harris had the only gun in the troop that could answer what Panza there was about to send down the road. The Durham stepped off at 10:15. What they walked into would cost them 353 men in a single day. The attack on LJV was preceded by everything the British could throw.

Divisional artillery laid a creeping barrage across the fields south of Bayer. Spitfires came in low, firing rockets into the tree lines. At 10:15 on the morning of June 14th, the men of the sixth and 9th battalions, Durham Light Infantry, rose from their positions and walked forward.

The Germans of Panzoair were waiting for them. This was not a conscript division holding a quiet sector. Panzelair was the German army’s armored demonstration unit assembled from the instructors of every tank school in the Reich. Every soldier had been selected for combat experience. Every crew had trained others before being sent to fight.

They were by any measure among the finest troops Germany could field. and they had been in Normandy since June 8th, digging in around Tilly Cersul and the villages to its west. They let the Durhams come close, very close, 150 yards, the length of a football pitch and a half. Close enough to see faces. Then they opened fire. What followed was 5 hours of fighting at a range where war becomes personal.

Hedros turned every lane into an ambush. German machine guns covered every approach. Snipers worked the upper windows of stone farmhouses. The Durhams fought field by field, house by house, with bayonets and grenades and the kind of grinding violence that fills casualty reports with numbers that cannot convey what happened to the men behind them.

By early afternoon, the village was taken. The price was 353 casualties in the Durham battalions, killed, wounded, and missing in a single day. A six DLI officer would later call it the best attack the battalion launched during the entire Normandy campaign. That gives you some idea of what the worst ones looked like. Major Mog reached the village center and set up a casualty station in the church.

The panzer layer infantry pulled back and now the tanks came forward. Fourth troop a squadron fourth/7th dragoon guards rolled into lv to hold what the infantry had paid for in blood. Three tanks Morrison Johnson Harris one firefly. Morrison parked his Sherman near the church center of the village covering the crossroads.

Johnson positioned his to the south, watching the road from below. Harris drove his Firefly to the eastern end of the main road, the road that ran straight toward Tis, straight toward the German lines, and stopped. He was facing east. Behind him, the village around him, the Durhams organizing their defense, dragging wounded into the church, setting up what anti-tank guns survived the advance, two six pounders.

Ahead of him, 800 m of open road lined with hedge, running into territory. Panzer lair, still controlled, Harris opened his Koopa hatch. He stood in his commander’s position, binoculars to his eyes, scanning east. Beside him in the turret sat his gunner, trooper Ian McKillip. The two had worked together long enough to need no speeches. Harris spotted.

He waited until the geometry was right, until the Panthers were passing across his field of fire rather than driving toward him. A flank shot. The Panthers side armor was 40 mm, less than a third of the frontal plate. At this angle and this range, McKillip could go through it like paper. Harris gave the word.

McKillip fired. The first round struck the lead panther in the engine compartment. It burned instantly. The third panther, the rearmost in the column, was hit next. A shell through the back. It stopped inside the village. The middle panther took a round in the running gear, lost steering, rolled another hundred yards, and broke down near the church where its crew abandoned it. Five rounds total. Five Panthers destroyed or disabled. Not a single miss. Let that settle for a moment. A tank that Britain’s own Ministry of Supply had tried to kill in its cradle. A weapon built by two officers who were ordered to stop. engineered by a vicer’s man who turned the gun sideways to make it fit, rushed into production before the prototype was even proven, had just done in five rounds what no other Allied tank in Normandy could do at all.

The fighting around Lva continued through the afternoon. Corporal Johnson’s Sherman took a hit and was knocked out. His crew escaped wounded. Within days, the report reached 21st Army Group headquarters. Within weeks, it reached the War Office in London. And within months, it reached the desks of the two men who had started all of this in a shed at Lworth with a locked gun, a shaking chassis, and an order telling them to stop, and who had been dismissed as amateurs for their trouble.

What those reports set in motion would reshape British armor for the rest of the war. After LJV, the numbers moved fast. Production of the Firefly accelerated through the summer. By late June, 149 were in Normandy. By the end of July, 235. By autumn, the allocation doubled. Two fireflies per troop instead of one.

By the time the factories stopped in 1945, between 2,100 and 2,200 had been built. Everyone carried Kilborn’s sideways breach, his shortened recoil cylinders, his welded bustle. Everyone descended from a prototype that shook itself apart in a shed in Dorset. The Germans never stopped hunting them. For the rest of the campaign, the order held, “Kill the long-barreled Sherman first.

” Firefly crews learned to live as marked men. They painted their barrels. They hid behind hedge. They knew that the muzzle flash of the 17 pounder, bright enough to blind the gunner for a moment, told every German within a mile where they sat. They fired anyway. And something unexpected showed in the loss reports.

Despite being the priority target, 19% of Fireflies were knocked out in Normandy compared to 29% of standard Shermans.
