Why The British Army Drove This ‘Tiny’ Buggy Into A Minefield To Save A Soldier After The Falklands D
Northern Iraq, spring of 1991. The story passed from unit to unit like this. A British soldier was down inside a suspected minefield. Conventional vehicles could not reach him without setting off the pressure plates buried in the dirt. Then a small six-wheeled buggy, weighing less than two tons, steered by motorcycle handlebars, rolled out across the same contaminated ground that had stopped everyone else.
It crossed the strip, recovered the casualty, and rolled back the way it had come. No mine detonated. The vehicle was simply too light, spread across too many wheels to trigger anything buried below. That is the story. The story is also almost completely uncorroborated. Supacat, the British company that built the vehicle, does not mention it anywhere in their corporate history.
No unit war diary that has surfaced names a casualty, a date, or a location. What is documented during the same operation is a different minefield rescue conducted by American military police of an Iraqi civilian. The British version may be a corrupted retelling that crossed the lines, but the vehicle is real.
And the only reason this story is even physically plausible is that British engineers had already built something almost nothing else in NATO could match. The reason the British Army needed such a vehicle goes back to a disaster 9 years earlier, May 25th, 1982, the Falklands War. Two Argentine Super Étendard strike aircraft fired air-launched Exocet missiles at the British task force closing on the islands.
The missiles missed their primary targets, the carriers, and locked instead onto the largest radar return left on the surface. That return was the merchant ship Atlantic Conveyor, requisitioned to carry the task force’s heavy lift helicopters. The ship was hit, burned for 3 days, and sank under tow on May 28th. 12 crew died, including her master, Captain Ian North.
Four Royal Air Force Chinook heavy lift helicopters were on board. Three were destroyed in the fire. Only one, ZA718, known as Bravo November, survived because it happened to be airborne on an air test when the missile struck. The strategic consequence was immediate. Without those Chinooks, the British landing force at San Carlos could not be lifted across East Falkland to the high ground around Stanley.
The plan had assumed helicopter lift for guns, ammunition, rations, and casualties. That assumption no longer applied. So, they walked. Royal Marines of 40, 42, and 45 Commando and paratroopers of two and three para covered roughly 56 miles in 3 days across peat bog and rock. They carried loads of about 80 lb per man. The march became known as the yomp.
In the April 2022 issue of Naval History Magazine, the United States Naval Institute concluded that the loss of those helicopters likely extended the war. After the war ended, the British Army went looking for a vehicle that could carry the loads those marching men had carried on their backs.
In 1983, Ministry of Defense trials on the Isle of Jura tested three candidates against each other. A Land Rover on low pressure tires, a Swedish BV 202 Snowcat, and a six-wheeled agricultural prototype from a small Devon company called Supercat. The Land Rover sank in the peat. The BV 202 could not carry or tow enough to support an airborne brigade in the field. The Supercat kept going.
Supercat had been founded in 1980 by an engineer called Nick Jones at Dunkeswell Aerodrome in Devon. With his then business partner, David Clayton, the original product was not military at all. It was an agricultural crop sprayer 6×6 built to cross waterlogged fields without churning the soil.
The military requirement appeared 2 years later, and the same chassis philosophy turned out to fit it exactly. The trials continued at Lydd Ranges in Kent, where the Army bought seven Mark 1 vehicles to recover targets across intertidal mud. A competition followed against around 20 other designs, including the Swiss Rolba Goblin and the Italian Asarco.
Supercat won. Williams Fairey Engineering was brought in to handle production volume because Supercat itself was too small. Pre-production trials ran through 1987. In 1988, 36 Mark II vehicles entered British Army service with five Airborne Brigade at Aldershot. What they bought was officially the All Terrain Mobility Platform, the ATMP.
Empty, it weighed about 1.9 tons. It could carry 1.6 tons of payload, almost its own weight again. The engine was a Volkswagen 1.9 L turbocharged diesel, 78 horsepower, mounted under the cargo bed. Drive went through a Volkswagen four-speed automatic gearbox, and then through duplex chains to all six wheels. There was no conventional suspension.
Compliance came entirely from the low-pressure Terra Wrangler flotation tires. The driver sat at the front and steered with motorcycle-style handlebars, which combined Ackermann steering at the front wheels with independent brake actuation each side for skid steering when needed. The number that mattered most was ground pressure.
The vehicle, fully loaded, exerted around 2.8 lb per square inch on the ground beneath it. According to Think Defence, which compiled the most detailed open-source technical record on the platform, that figure is roughly an eighth of what a fully loaded Land Rover puts down. It was this specification, more than any other, that made the minefield story even theoretically possible.
Top speed on road was 60 km/h. Maximum gradient was 45°. The vehicle could ford 600 mm of water, and unladen, would actually float on its hardened aluminum belly plate. Two could be carried inside a C-130 Hercules. Two could be carried inside a Chinook. Four could be slung underneath one Chinook in pairs.
From 1992, with clearance from the Joint Air Transport Establishment, two ATMPs could be parachute dropped on a single medium stressed platform, or one ATMP alongside a 105 mm light gun. In 1989, before the vehicle had seen any combat, the parachute regiment ran a proof of concept that hinted at what else the platform could become.
A Javelin Lightweight Multiple Launcher, the British shoulder-launched surface-to-air missile that replaced Blowpipe, was fitted to the ATMP’s cargo bed. A second ATMP followed behind as the ammunition limber. The pair gave airborne forces an air defense capability that could move into a drop zone with the same lift that carried the troops themselves. The trial worked.

The first operational deployment came in 1991. After the Gulf War ended, Saddam Hussein’s forces turned on the Kurdish population of northern Iraq, and a coalition humanitarian intervention followed under the name Operation Haven. The British contribution to the larger American-led operation Provide Comfort. 20 ATMPs were reverted from their wartime Rapier towing configuration, fitted with cranes, and deployed with Royal Marines into the mountains near the Turkish border.
The stacking pallet handling system, which let the vehicle act as its own forklift, proved particularly useful in austere landing zones. It is in this context that the minefield rescue story originated. Think Defense records the account, but uses the word reportedly and names no unit. Supacat’s own corporate history is silent on it.
No surviving primary source has been located in open archives. No name, no date, no map reference. The most that can be said with confidence is that during the same operation, in the same theater, American military police did recover a wounded Iraqi civilian from a minefield, an action that resulted in Soldiers’ Medals.
Whether the British retelling is a separate event or a corrupted version of the American one, the documentary record does not yet allow us to say. It is also worth noting that many of the mines in Iraqi Kurdistan in 1991 were tripwire actuated bounding fragmentation types, against which low ground pressure offers no protection at all.
The story is plausible. It is not, on present evidence, documented. What is fully documented is what came next. In 1999, during the Kosovo intervention under Operation Agricola, ATMPs moved with 5 Airborne Brigade into the Kacanik defile, the mountain pass that connects Macedonia to Pristina. The terrain was steep, partly mined by withdrawing Serbian forces, and threaded with tunnels and switchbacks where a wrong turn put a vehicle off the road for good.

The Ministry of Defence’s own caption uses the alternative spelling Supercat, which is the origin of that occasional misspelling in print. The vehicles were used to establish radio rebroadcast sites on high ground, and to clear secondary routes that wheeled trucks could not safely use.
In 2003, during Operation Telic, ATMPs crossed from Camp Eagle 2 in Kuwait into southern Iraq with 1 Para and 3 Para. Published photography shows 3 Para crewing an ATMP outside Basra in March of that year. By that point, the platform was 15 years into frontline service and had still not been outclassed for its specific role.
The hardest test came in Afghanistan, between 2006 and 2010, 16 Air Assault Brigade used ATMPs in Helmand for counter improvised explosive device work, for logistics inside compound bases, and for a specialist role that exploited the vehicle’s air portability. The GKN Fuel Cat variant carried 1,000 L of aviation fuel and the pumping equipment needed to set up forward arming and refueling points for Apache attack helicopters.
A pair of Fuel Cats could deliver 4,000 L into a remote site that no road tanker could reach. But, Helmand was where the vehicle’s age finally caught up with it. Think Defence records that 50% availability of the deployed fleet was considered a good day. Spares took up airbridge capacity that the brigade needed for ammunition and water.
The Volkswagen engine, designed in the 1980s, was not Euro emissions compliant, and Supacat declined to develop a heat mitigation pack because the company was now fully committed to building Jackal patrol vehicles for the same campaign. The ATMP was quietly withdrawn from Afghanistan in 2010.
In comparative terms, nothing in NATO inventories combined the ATMP’s three defining attributes, namely airborne logistics payload, very low ground pressure, and internal carriage in a Chinook. The closest historical analog was the German Faun Kraka, a folding 4×2 air-droppable carrier the West German Fallschirmjäger had used from the 1970s.
The Kraka was lighter, but it carried a third of the payload and had no equivalent ground pressure performance. Modern American equivalents, the Polaris MRZR Alpha family and the Marine Corps Growler internally transportable vehicle, are faster on road, but carry less, and do not match the ATMP’s ability to take its full payload across saturated ground.
According to the Janes coverage of Land Forces 2024 in Brisbane, Supacat itself argued at that exhibition that no current vehicle had directly replaced what the ATMP actually did after 2010. The British Army’s airborne logistics gap was filled in pieces rather than replaced as a whole.
The first attempted replacement was the Springer, a 4×2 all-terrain carrier built on an Israeli Tomcar chassis by Enhanced Protection Systems. 78 were bought in 2009 for 3 million pounds. They were withdrawn from Afghanistan in early 2011 and removed from the British inventory by September of that year, with surplus units sold for around 8,000 pounds each.
It was a documented procurement failure. What actually took over the role was a mix of Yamaha Grizzly quad bikes with Logic trailers for short-range tactical loads and the Polaris MRZR, an American light tactical vehicle for longer reach. The Royal Marines used the MRZR at Exercise Green Dagger in 2021. United Kingdom special forces have operated the platform for several years.
In April 2024, the British Army launched two new procurement programs, light tactical mobility platform light and medium, which Think Defence assesses as effectively a formalized MRZR requirement. The conceptual heir to the ATMP on the other hand was a different vehicle entirely. The same Supacat engineers who had built it went on to design the HMT 400 and the HMT 600, which entered service as the Jackal and the Coyote.
Those vehicles weigh roughly five times as much and do a different job, fire support and reconnaissance rather than airborne logistics. But they share the same design lineage and the same Devon workshop that produced the original. In February 2023, the Ministry of Defence ordered 70 further Jackal 3s. In September 2024, a contract for 53 Jackal 3 extenders followed.
Vehicles that convert between 4×4 and 6×6 configuration using a modular third axle. The basic ATMP role, however, the light tactical airborne load carrier, has remained unfilled in British service for over a decade. The minefield story may never be confirmed. What can be confirmed is the British engineers, working from the lessons of a war they had nearly lost their helicopter fleet during, built a vehicle that put under 3 lb per square inch on the ground beneath it, that could be parachuted in pairs onto a drop zone, that could carry almost its own weight in cargo, and that no foreign equivalent quite matched. Around 200 were built in total across the platform’s service life. Most served in the British Army. The rest went to Canada, Malaysia, and Mexico. The story passed between units because on paper it should have worked. A vehicle that light on tires that soft across that many wheels could in principle cross ground that would kill anything heavier. That was not luck. That was engineering done quietly in a
small workshop in Devon for a problem the country had only learned it had when its helicopters were already burning at sea.
