Why This ‘Flimsy’ British Tank Killed T-62s in the Desert Without Any Real Armour D

May 1982, East Falkland, a frozen, wind-hammered stretch of peat bog 8,000 mi from Britain, where the ground is so soft that a loaded Land Rover sinks to its axles within minutes. A flat-bottomed landing craft drops its ramp into the shallows of San Carlos Water. The first vehicle to roll off is small, absurdly small.

It weighs less than 8 tons, lighter than a loaded fire engine. Its hull is not steel, it is aluminum, the same metal used to make drink cans and aircraft fuselages. A heavy machine gun could punch through it. A Soviet era tank round would pass clean through both sides without even slowing down.

It carries a three-round cannon, a crew of three, and absolutely no business being anywhere near a battlefield. And yet, over the next 3 weeks, vehicles exactly like this one will provide direct fire support for some of the most brutal infantry assaults of the Falklands War, cross terrain that defeated every wheeled vehicle on the islands, and help break the Argentine defensive line on the hills above Port Stanley.

They were FV107 Scimitars, Britain’s aluminum reconnaissance tank, and they were never supposed to fight at all. To understand why an aluminum box with a pop gun ended up doing the work of a main battle tank, you need to understand the problem Britain was trying to solve in the 1960s, and the single design decision that changed everything.

In the early 1960s, Britain still garrisoned troops across the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Africa. It was expensive, unsustainable. The new strategy was simple: stop stationing soldiers everywhere, and instead build vehicles light enough to fly them in when trouble started. The requirement landed on the desk of Alvis Limited in Coventry.

Build a family of reconnaissance vehicles small enough that two of them could fit inside a single C-130 Hercules transport aircraft, fast enough to outrun anything they could not outfight, and light enough to be slung beneath a Chinook helicopter. The answer was aluminum. The Americans had used aluminum armor on the M113 personnel carrier since 1959.

It offered roughly the same structural rigidity as steel at a fraction of the weight, but it came with a brutal compromise. Aluminum would stop rifle rounds and shell splinters, but anything heavier than a 12.7 mm machine gun would go straight through. The designers knew this.

They accepted it because the entire point was not to fight. The point was to scout, report, and disappear before anyone could shoot back. The vehicle family was designated CVR(T), combat vehicle reconnaissance tracked. Alvis received the prototype contract in 1967 and built 30 test vehicles. Trials ran in Australia, Abu Dhabi, Norway, and Canada.

The Scorpion variant carried a 76 mm gun. The missile carrier became the Striker, and the variant armed with a 30 mm cannon, designed specifically to kill Soviet armored personnel carriers at over 1,000 m, became the Scimitar. The cannon was called the RARDEN. It was designed jointly by the Royal Armament Research and Development Establishment and the Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield.

The name itself, a contraction of those two institutions. Its principal designer was Norman Brint, a senior engineer at Enfield, and his philosophy was precision over volume. The gun fired single shots or short bursts from three-round clips, manually loaded, with a maximum of six rounds ready at any time.

Sustained firepower was poor, but accuracy was extraordinary. Consistent 1-m groups at 1,000 m, and because the long recoil action ejected spent cases forward and out of the turret, the gun produced no fumes inside the vehicle and needed no external power to operate. If every electrical system in the Scimitar failed, the RARDEN would still fire. At 7.

8 tons combat weight, the Scimitar could reach 80 km/h on road. It could ford a meter of water unprepared or swim across a river using an inflatable flotation screen, propelled by its own tracks. Its ground pressure was so low it matched that of a soldier on foot, and two of them could be loaded into a single Hercules and dropped into a crisis anywhere on Earth within hours.

It entered British Army service in 1971. Fast, light, accurate, and fragile. The perfect scout, provided nobody ever asked it to do anything else. Nobody got that memo. The Falklands proved the Scimitar before anyone expected it to. When Argentina invaded in April 1982, B Squadron of the Blues and Royals was preparing for a routine exercise.

Within days, two troops, around 30 men, were ordered south. They took four Scorpions, four Scimitars, and a single Samson recovery vehicle. Nine vehicles. That was it. The only British armor to fight in the entire war. The vehicles sailed aboard the MV Elk. The crews sailed on the SS Canberra.

After gunnery practice at Ascension Island, the Scimitars were transferred to HMS Fearless and brought ashore at San Carlos on the 21st of May using Mexefloat rafts. Scimitar call sign 23 Charlie was the first to roll off the landing craft, its crew later claiming they were used as guinea pigs to test the depth of the water.

Its commander was Corporal of Horse Klaus Fischer. Its gunner, Reg Hastings, was 18 years old. Critics had warned the light tanks would sink in the Falklands peat. They were wrong. The Scimitars’ ground pressure, barely heavier than a man’s boot, carried it across ground that swallowed wheeled vehicles whole.

Argentina’s own Panhard armored cars never left Port Stanley. They could not move. The real test came on the night of the 13th of June when 2 Para launched its assault on Wireless Ridge. This was the same battalion that had fought in two weeks earlier without armored support, a decision that cost them dearly, including the life of their commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel H. Jones.

That mistake would not be repeated. Lieutenant Colonel David Chandler, who had replaced Jones, demanded armor. Two Scorpions and two Scimitars of three troop rolled forward in the darkness, their thermal night sights picking out Argentine positions that the infantry could not see. The technique was simple and vicious.

A short burst of machine gun fire to provoke a response, then the 30-mm round and silenced whatever replied. Few positions fired twice. Two Para took Wireless Ridge with three men killed and 11 wounded. At Goose Green, without armor, they had lost 17. That same night, four troop under Lieutenant Mark Coroth supported the Scots Guards diversionary assault on Mount Tumbledown.

One vehicle hit a mine on the lower slopes and was disabled. A Chinook, the only heavy lift helicopter in the entire theater, flew in, lifted the damaged Scimitar off the mountainside and delivered it to field repair. It was back in action within days. The Falklands taught the British Army something it had not planned for. The Scimitar was not just a scout, it was the only armored vehicle that could go where the fighting was.

During Operation Desert Storm in February 1991, Scimitars of the 16th/5th, the Queen’s Royal Lancers, led the reconnaissance screen for the entire first British Armoured Division. On the 25th and 26th of February, a troop of Scimitars engaged Iraqi T-62 tanks and destroyed them, punching through the frontal armor of a medium battle tank with 30-mm armor-piercing sabot rounds.

A reconnaissance vehicle that weighed less than 8 tons was killing tanks that weighed 36. And in a moment that perfectly captured the absurdity of the Scimitar’s war record, one vehicle was hit by a round from a T-55. The shell entered one side of the aluminum hull, passed clean through, and exited the other side without injuring a single crew member.

The armor was so thin the round did not even detonate. A Gulf War veteran and Scimitar gunner later recalled the experience with dark humor, describing the vehicle as cramped, foul-smelling, and two decades old. Admitting that a man could blow a pea through the armor, and then confirming three kills in a single night action.

In 2003, the Scimitar went back to Iraq. C Squadron of the 1st Queen’s Dragoon Guards supported three Commando Brigade on the Al-Faw Peninsula and the advance toward Basra. The squadron endured one of the longest periods of sustained contact of the entire operation, roughly 20 days, and was later awarded a Commando Dagger by the Royal Marines.

But, 2003 also produced the Scimitar’s darkest moment. On the 28th of March, two American A-10 Thunderbolt strafed D Squadron, Blues and Royals patrol near Basra. Lance Corporal of Horse Matty Hull was killed. Five others were wounded. The driver, Trooper Christopher Finney, was 18 years old.

He reentered his burning Scimitar to radio a distress call, dragged a wounded comrade to safety under fire, and attempted to reach Hull before exploding ammunition drove him back. Finney was awarded the George Cross, the highest civilian gallantry decoration in the United Kingdom. His citation noted courage and devotion out of all proportion to his age and experience.

He became the youngest person ever to receive it. In Afghanistan, the Scimitar deployed repeatedly to Helmand Province across multiple rotations of Operation Herrick. Its low ground pressure, once an advantage on peat and sand, now worked against it. The flat aluminum hull offered catastrophic vulnerability to improvised explosive devices.

An urgent upgrade program produced the Scimitar Mark II with a mine blast protected hull, improved armor, and repositioned fuel tanks. In a Mark II carrying a crew from B Squadron, Queen’s Dragoon Guards, was engulfed by an IED blast. All three crew walked away unharmed. The vehicle commander, Lieutenant Peter Gordon Finlayson, credited the upgraded vehicle entirely, noting that the Taliban feared the Scimitar II and refused to engage it directly.

The closest American equivalent is the M3 Bradley Cavalry Fighting Vehicle. It carries a 25-mm chain gun, TOW antitank missiles, and a squad of scouts. It is better armed and better protected. It also weighs over 27 tons, cannot be carried in pairs by a Hercules, and cannot cross the kind of ground that a Scimitar routinely did.

The French built their own answer, the AMX-10RC, a six-wheeled reconnaissance vehicle with a 105-mm gun, heavier firepower, heavier vehicle, and wheels, not tracks, which meant it would have been useless in the Falklands, just like every other wheeled vehicle that tried. Most nations chose wheels for reconnaissance.

Britain chose tracks. And the Falklands, the desert, and Afghanistan proved that choice right over and over again. The CVR(T) family exceeded 3,500 vehicles built. The Scimitar served for over 50 years, from 1971 to its official retirement in April 2023. It fought in the Falklands, the Gulf, Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

Its replacement, the Ajax, weighs 38 tons, five times heavier. It can no longer fit two in a Hercules. It can no longer be slung beneath a Chinook. The age of the flyweight scout is over. But the Scimitar was not quite finished. In 2023, 23 Mark II Scimitars were delivered to Ukraine, refurbished by Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land in 32 days.

On the muddy, cratered terrain of eastern Ukraine, a vehicle built to cross Falklands peat bogs may yet find one more war it was never designed to fight.
