The ‘Ridiculous’ German Mini-Tank That Drops From Aircraft and Kills Real Tanks D

1969. The Porsche engineering offices Stoodgart, West Germany. A team of designers best known for building sports cars is staring at a military problem they have no business solving. The West German army, the Bundesphere, has handed them a requirement that reads like a contradiction.

Build an armored fighting vehicle. Make it capable of destroying Soviet main battle tanks and make it light enough to fit inside a helicopter. Two of them inside a single helicopter. The men in that office sketch something that looks less like a weapon of war and more like a mistake. It is shorter than a family car.

It is narrower than a hallway. It weighs less than three tons, which is roughly the same as an armored Humvey, a vehicle no military on Earth would send against a tank. It sits on rubber tracks. It has a crew of two or three men who must fold themselves into a hull barely large enough to contain them. It looks absurd. It looks wrong.

It looks like something a child drew when asked to imagine a tank, but had only ever seen a go-kart. And yet this machine once built would go on to deploy to Somalia, to Bosnia, to Kosovo, to Afghanistan, and to Sudan. It would serve the German Falcher Yaga, the airborne paratroopers, for more than three decades.

It would carry a missile system capable of killing any main battle tank on Earth. It would stand guard over an airfield in a war zone while hundreds of civilians were flown to safety. and it would be quietly recognized by military analysts worldwide as one of the most ingenious solutions to one of the hardest problems in modern warfare.

Its name was the Visel, the Weasel, and it was the smallest armored fighting vehicle in the Western world. To understand why the Weasel existed, you need to understand the nightmare that haunted NATO planners throughout the 1960s and 1970s. The Soviet Union had built the largest armored force in human history.

Tens of thousands of tanks, thousands of infantry fighting vehicles, an army designed not for defense, but for offense, intended to surge westward through the Fuler Gap in central Germany, and drive to the English Channel before NATO could respond. Western analysts estimated that a Soviet armored column could advance 90 km in a single day.

That pace left almost no time for conventional ground forces to reposition, no time for heavy armor to redeploy, almost no time for anything. NATO’s answer was layered. nuclear weapons at one extreme, artillery and air power in the middle, and at the sharp edge, light airborne and air mobile infantry who could be dropped ahead of the Soviet advance, set up defensive positions, and slow the enemy long enough for heavier forces to arrive.

The problem was that those paratroopers were infantry, lightly armed infantry, and infantry, no matter how brave or well-trained, cannot stop a T-72 with a rifle. The West German army, the Bundesphere, had a specific version of this problem. Its elite folure, the airborne infantry, were among the finest light soldiers in Europe.

Tough, aggressive, well- drilled, but when they landed, they had almost nothing that could kill a tank beyond shoulder fired missiles and towed anti-tank guns. The towed guns were slow and vulnerable. The shoulder fired weapons required men to stand in the open close to the enemy to use them, and there was nothing, nothing at all, that could move under its own power and carry anti-tank firepower to wherever the threat appeared fastest.

The vehicle they were using for transport was called the Kraker. It was a small unarmored open topped quad that looked like a farm vehicle. It offered its crew precisely zero protection, zero armor, zero cover. If a Soviet machine gunner on a reconnaissance vehicle saw it, the men aboard were dead before they could fire.

The Bundesphere needed something armored, something mobile, something that could be flown in by helicopter and driven off the ramp, ready to fight in seconds. And it needed two of those vehicles to fit inside a single Sikosski CH53 transport helicopter because that was what the Airborne Division had available. That was the requirement handed to Porsche’s engineering team in 1969.

And what they drew was a tanket. The concept of a tanket, a very small, lightly armored tracked vehicle. Had been tried and largely abandoned in the 1930s. The Italian and British armies had built them before the Second World War and found them too lightly protected to survive on a modern battlefield. But the 1970s were not the 1930s.

The weapons that needed to be carried had changed completely. A small vehicle no longer needed a gun. It could carry a guided missile, and a guided missile could kill anything. Porsche’s initial studies explored both wheeled and tracked designs. By the early 1970s, the tracked concept had won.

The requirements were refined. The vehicle had to weigh no more than what two could carry in a CH53. It had to be armored against rifle and machine gun fire. It had to carry a crew of at least two and it had to mount either a tow anti-tank missile system or a 20 mm autoc cannon. The formal development contract was signed on 27 June 1974.

The vehicle was named the Weasel, German for weasel. Small, low to the ground, difficult to detect, fast for its size, and vicious when cornered. Porsche built the first prototype in 1976. Trials ran through 1977 and 1978. The results were promising. The vehicle worked. It was fast. It was agile. It was genuinely tiny and genuinely hard to see and cover.

Then in 1979, the entire program was cancelled. The cancellation came days before the final production contract was due to take effect. Budget pressures, shifting priorities, and bureaucratic inertia killed a program that the airborne forces had spent years building. The Falamaga were left with the Kraka, the unarmored quad, and no prospect of anything better.

Porsche continued low-level development work using private funding partly because several foreign armies had expressed interest and for a few years the visel existed in a kind of bureaucratic limbo built proven and unwanted. Then the early 1980s arrived. Soviet armor grew. NATO’s anxieties deepened.

The German airborne forces pushed back. The requirement was revived. This time with an even sharper deadline. A market survey went to 19 manufacturers in 1983. Two competing designs were requested, one heavier, one lighter. Porsche’s tracked design competed against a wheeled vehicle from Dameler Benz. The trials ran and Porsche won again.

The final development contract was awarded on 7 June 1985. This time Porsche had 18 months and four prototypes to prove the concept to production standard. The production contract went to Cup Mak, the shipyard and engineering firm in Keel, which later became part of Rhin Metal Land System.

The visel was officially accepted into Bundesphere service on 5 June 1987. The first serial vehicles reached the troops on the 1st of August 1990. The development had taken more than 20 years from first study to first delivery. It had survived one cancellation, a revival, a bidding competition, and two changes of manufacturer.

The men in that Stuttgart office who first sketched it in 1969 had spent two decades waiting for the army to make up its mind. What they had built was unlike anything else in the Western world. The Weasel 1 in its production form weighed approximately 2 and 3/4 tons. For comparison, a modern main battle tank weighs between 55 and 70 tons.

The Weasel weighed less than a single track link of a Leopard 2. It measured 3 1/2 m long, 1.8 m wide, and 1.8 m tall. A large man standing flatfooted could rest his chin on the roof. It was without question the smallest armored tracked fighting vehicle in service with any Western army. The hull was all welded high hardness steel. It would stop 7.

62 millimeter rifle fire and artillery shell fragments. It would not stop much more than that. Against a heavy machine gun at close range or against any anti-tank weapon, the Whisel’s armor offered comfort rather than protection, but that was a deliberate trade. The Whistle was not designed to stand and fight.

It was designed to appear from cover, fire, and disappear. Its protection was its size. Power came from a 5-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine from the Volkswagen and Audi group, producing approximately 86 horsepower. This gave the vehicle a top speed on road of around 70 km/h, which for a tracked vehicle of this weight was remarkable.

The powertoweight ratio was among the best of any tracked vehicle in service. It could accelerate hard, turn sharply, and stop quickly. On cross-country ground, it could sustain speeds that wheeled vehicles struggled to match. The running gear was simple. three dual road wheels per side, a front drive sprocket, a rear idler, and a single return roller.

The tracks were rubber padded and put almost no pressure on soft ground. The Visel could cross terrain that heavier vehicles would sink into. It could ford water to half a meter deep and cross a trench 1.2 m wide. It was not amphibious, but it could go places that everything heavier could not.

The first variant mounted the tow anti-tank guided missile system.

This gave the Whistle a reach of roughly 3,750 m, well beyond the effective combat range of most tank guns. The launcher sat on the roof of the vehicle. The crew of three included a driver, a gunner, and commander, and a loader. The vehicle carried seven missiles in total, one in the tube, five in the hull, and one stowed externally.

The gunner used an ENT4 thermal imaging site, which gave full nightfighting capability in darkness, in rain, in smoke. The tow weasel could acquire a target, lock on, and fire with the same precision as in daylight. The second variant mounted the rhinmetal MK20 RH20220 mm autoc cannon in a small one-man powered turret.

The cannon had a dual feed system, meaning the gunner could switch between armor-piercing and high explosive rounds without reloading. The ready ammunition load was around 160 rounds. The cannon had an elevation range of -10° to + 45°, which meant it could engage low-flying helicopters and light aircraft as well as ground targets.

The crew for the cannon variant was two, a driver and a gunner commander. The cannon weasel was the fire support partner to the tow weasel. The missiles killed tanks at range. The cannon killed everything else. Both variants could be carried two at a time inside a Sakorski CH53G transport helicopter. This was the core capability that justified the entire program.

A single helicopter could lift two weasels, their crews, and a small amount of additional ammunition. A flight of four helicopters could deliver eight weasels and their crews in one pass. Those vehicles could be rolling and fighting within minutes of the ramp going down. This was not theory. The airborne forces trained this procedure constantly throughout the 1990s.

Helicopter in, vehicles roll off, disperse into cover, set up a missile screen, engage the enemy at maximum range, survive by being too small to see and too fast to catch. There was one piece of the original plan that never survived contact with reality. The vessel was supposed to be parachute droppable.

Four vehicles were used in parachute delivery trials. All four were destroyed. The landing forces on such a small, dense vehicle were simply too violent. The parachute capability was abandoned. The visel would arrive by helicopter or inside a transport aircraft, not on a parachute pallet. This was an important limitation.

If no airfield or landing zone existed, the visel could not get there. The felchyaga could jump in. Their vehicles could not follow them. The first test of the visel in an actual conflict came in 1993. Somalia. The bundesphere’s deployment to Somalia under UNOSM2 was a historic moment. It was the first time since the Second World War that German soldiers had deployed into an active conflict zone in an armed capacity.

The contingent of roughly 1,700 soldiers drawn largely from Loflander Brigade 26 and Felcham Yaga Betatayon 261 deployed to Ble UN in central Somalia, both tow and cannon weasels deployed. There were no Soviet tanks in Somalia, but the vehicle’s thermal imaging site, the same site designed for hunting armor, proved extraordinarily valuable in the darkness and dust of the Somali interior.

The weasel could observe ground that the naked eye and conventional optics could not penetrate. Soldiers from other UN contingents who encountered it for the first time reached for the same word. They called it the pocket tank. The name stuck. Somalia established the weasel’s operational reputation.

It was mobile enough to patrol. It was armored enough to absorb small arms fire without casualties. It was lethal enough that local armed groups understood they were not looking at a scout car. They were looking at something that could kill them at distance in darkness through cover.

That psychological weight was real. The Balkans followed. Bosnia from 1995, Kosovo from 1999. Peace enforcement roles, not direct combat, but not safe either. The Weasel’s combination of mobility and firepower made it a credible deterrent in precisely the environment where deterrence is the mission. Afghanistan was a different story entirely.

The Bundesphere deployed Visel 1 vehicles, principally the TAW variant, to the Kundas region of northern Afghanistan as part of the ESAF mission. The Falamya operated in some of the most dangerous territory in the German sector. The Taliban were not Soviet tank armies. They were infantry, IED teams, and ambush specialists.

The anti-tank missiles had no tanks to hunt. What the weasel offered in Afghanistan was thermal observation and armored mobility for night convoys in conditions where the unarmored patrol vehicles were being destroyed by roadside bombs. A remotec controlled visel fitted with a ground penetrating radar also contributed to route clearance detecting buried IEDs ahead of columns and controlled from inside an armored fuchs.

The big engagements in Kundas were fought with Panzahitza 2000s and MA infantry fighting vehicles. The visel was present and on the ground, but an honest assessment from inside the Bundesv acknowledged it was being used contrary to its original concept. It was designed for open European terrain where a missile could reach 4 km and kill a tank before the crew knew they were targeted.

In Afghanistan, ranges were short, threats were buried, and the composite armor protection package did not arrive until after the combat phase of the mission. That was a source of genuine frustration in the airborne forces. But the visil came home with its reputation intact. if reframed.

It was not the tank killer the Cold War planners had drawn up. It was a small adaptable armored hull that could be reconfigured for almost any role a vehicle that size could perform. April 1993 had been Somalia. April 2023 would be Sudan. On 23rd April 2023, armed conflict erupted in cartoon between the Sudanese armed forces and the rapid support forces paramilitary group.

Within hours, European governments were organizing evacuation flights for their citizens trapped in the country. The German government authorized Operation Rouse Cartum, a military evacuation mission to extract German nationals and allied civilians. The Falshamyaga of Luft Lander Brigade 1 and Falshamyaga Regiment 26 flew into Wadisedna airfield approximately 22 km north of Kartum to secure the landing zone.

They brought visels with them. The vehicles in this deployment were a mix of the cannon variant and the newer MLS variant which by 2023 had replaced the aging tow system with the Israeli designed Spike LR missile. The weasels fanned out around the perimeter of the airfield. The crews established observation posts.

The threat was real. Armed factions were active throughout the region. The airfield was not in a secure environment. It was a contested zone and the paratroopers holding it were a small force surrounded by a country in the process of tearing itself apart. Eight flights over three days lifted 740 people to safety.

Among them were 200 German nationals, 90 Canadians, 40 Dutch citizens and civilians from approximately 30 nations. Not a shot was fired. The weasels on that perimeter had something to do with that. A vehicle that’s sized carrying a missile capable of reaching out 4 km and killing an armored vehicle changes the calculation for anyone considering an attack on a position. Size is not what matters.

What is in the launcher matters. What the crew can see through the thermal site matters. And on that airfield north of Kartum, the weasel told every armed group in the area the same thing. This position is defended. Come if you want to test it. No one did. Now place that vehicle alongside its rivals and the full logic of German thinking becomes clear.

The Soviet Union solved the same problem with a completely different philosophy. Their answer was the BMD series. The BMD1 introduced in 1969 weighed approximately 7 1/2 tons and carried a 73 mm gun, an anti-tank missile, and a compartment for paratroopers. It was fully amphibious and could be parachute dropped on a pallet system.

The VDV, the Soviet airborne forces, conceived of themselves as an offensive arm. They would drop with their armored vehicles and fight as a mechanized force independent of outside support. The BMD was heavier, more expensive, more heavily armed, and did not need a helicopter. It could fall from the sky under its own parachute.

The American answer was the M551 Sheridan. 15 to 17 tons of aluminum hull and a 152mm gun that fired both shells and the Chala anti-tank missile. The Sheridan’s only combat parachute drop came during the United States invasion of Panama in December 1989. It served in Vietnam and Desert Storm, but was plagued by thin armor penetrated by heavy machine guns, an unreliable gun and missile system, and a hull devastatingly vulnerable to mines.

The Sheridan retired in the 1990s without a true replacement. The German philosophy was different from both. The Bundesphere did not try to build an airborne tank. It accepted that its paratroopers were light infantry, that light infantry cannot win an armored battle, and that the correct answer was not a heavier vehicle, but a smarter one, too small to see easily, too fast to catch, able to kill at range before the enemy understood where the shot came from.

A vehicle that used precision to substitute for armor. That logic produced a machine the size of a go-kart that could reach out nearly 4 km and put a missile through the front plate of a main battle tank. No Western Army produced anything like it. Britain had no equivalent. France had no equivalent. The United States replaced the Sheridan with nothing airdropable.

Germany alone built a weasel. By 2010, the weasel was aging. Its tow missiles were becoming obsolete against tanks fitted with reactive armor and active protection systems. The protection package was inadequate for the IED threat that had dominated the previous decade of warfare. The Bundesphere launched a service life extension program to keep the weasel one operational beyond 2030.

The centerpiece was replacing the T with me LS, the guided missile system based on the Spike LR. Spike LR is fire and forget with a range of 4,000 m. It can be guided after launch, allowing crews to engage targets behind cover. The first Mel’s weasels reached operational units in late 2022.

The cannon variant received the A5 upgrade package with improved optics, reduced acoustic signature, and composite armor panels. The Weasel 2, a stretched version introduced from 2001, carries different payloads entirely. The most significant is the Oelot. Fitted with a four round launcher for Stinger surfaceto-air missiles and a fire control radar.

It can detect air targets to 20 km and fire within 10 seconds of detection. In 2012, the German army disbanded its dedicated air defense arm and passed the Oelot to the Luftwaffer. The war in Ukraine has since made that decision look like one of the most costly mistakes of the era. The Bundesphere is now rebuilding air defense from nearly nothing.

The question of what comes after the Visel remains unanswered. A replacement program, the light airborne weapons carrier was launched in 2023. One company, Ryan Matal, submitted a bid. In November 2024, the Bundes canled the program. The price was too high. How Germany’s paratroopers will kill tanks from the air in the next decade is, as of this writing, an open question. 1969.

The brief read like a joke. They built it anyway. What they produced was underpowered against heavy armor in a direct stand-up fight. Too lightly armored to survive a determined anti-tank ambush. Too large to parachute drop after four test vehicles were destroyed trying. and too small to carry the kind of firepower that fills a battlefield commander with real confidence.

And yet in the streets of Belluan, in the mud of Bosnia, in the dust of Kundas, and on the perimeter of an airfield north of Cartoum, the vessel worked when it mattered. It gave paratroopers something they had never had before. A vehicle of their own, small enough to carry, fast enough to reposition, armed enough to be taken seriously. 343 were built.

The Bundesphere is the only army on Earth to have operated them. They remain in service today, upgraded and modernized, ready to be loaded into a helicopter, flown to wherever the threat appears, and rolled off the ramp in seconds. The Soviets built airborne tanks. The Americans tried and gave up.

Germany built a weasel. That is not a compromise. That is a doctrine. And it worked.
